March 2005
Since 2001, we have been experiencing a highly significant planetary aspect that will be present until 2011. This ominous planetary picture is the septile of Pluto to Neptune. Historically, the last time we experienced this aspect was in the time period between 1936 and 1940, coinciding with the militarizing of Germany under Hitler and the Third Reich and the beginning of WW II. This time, these planets are prominent in the natal horoscope of the U.S.A., involving the ascendant and the moon in the signs of Sagittarius (globalism) and Aquarius (democracy). I am of the opinion that the events of 9/11 symbolized by the earlier opposition of Saturn and Pluto have triggered a dangerous instability in our nation that is leading us into an ever-expanding, endless, nebulous “war on terror” backed up by a culture of fear and a wave of religious fanaticism. This has the effect of our permitting the militarizing of our nation, leading us toward a kind of programmed downward spiral from democracy to a dictatorship of what Pres. Eisenhower warned us about in 1960, the “military industrial complex.” All this is happening while back home, our economy is being tanked by giant budget deficits, the flow of millions of jobs out of the country to cheap labor markets abroad, corporate imperialism, the attempted destruction of Social Security, and our own democracy being threatened by the Patriot Act that subverts the Constitution by permitting anyone to be arrested, imprisoned, tortured and deprived of the right to be tried in a court of law. Many people from both the left and the right of the political spectrum are expressing grave concern for the future of the U.S.A. and the world-at-large. The story of American corporate imperialism and its long history of manipulation, hidden agendas, and the overthrow of leaders of nations, is contained in the book “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” by John Perkins. I would highly recommend we take the information in this book very seriously. This month, there are a lot of planetary aspects bringing our attention to the matters at hand. March 1st through 2nd, Mercury squares Pluto as Mars semisextiles Neptune, revealing more fundamental instabilities in the economy. Mars opposes Saturn between March 7th and 8th, symbolizing more violence and war, and Venus squares Pluto between the 17th and the 18th emphasizing the severity of the currency crises involving the fall of the dollar. Mercury goes retrograde on March 20th (till April 12th) reminding us not to sign important documents or make impulsive decisions that will have to be reversed later on. he Ides of March are reminding us that we need to wake up and take possession of our senses, involve ourselves in the time-honored democratic process of debate, and let our voices be heard before it is too late.
The Economy: This month will be a down time for the stock market, except for gold which will likely move upward between the 10th and the 18th as Jupiter trines Neptune. With Mars’ harsh opposition to Saturn between the 7th and the 8th, realists will prevail over the spin-meisters! This newsletter has been advising readers that we are in a commodities bull market since 2000 that will likely last for over 20 years. Energy stocks, precious and industrial metals, stocks related to water purification are all good to own at this time.
Politics: Last month’s newsletter warned of a political scandal coming up (between the 15th and the 17th of Feb.) that would likely become a major issue in Aug of 2006. The Valerie Plame whistle blowing scandal emerged as federal investigators are forcing two journalists to reveal their “sources” of information with regard to blowing the cover on this top CIA operative. Robert Novak, the original reporter who revealed her name and “outed” her, has not been called to task and nobody seems to know why he has been left out of this. Between April 12th and April 14th (when Mars goes over Neptune and Mercury goes direct), we may hear more about the ongoing investigation. The transit of Mars in Capricorn opposing Pres. Bush’s natal Saturn brings out his opposition in the Congress and we can look for some pretty fierce fighting to go on this month. Not only Democrats, but Republicans who are horrified at the fiscal budget deficits will be opposing his Social Security plan that will cost between two to three trillion dollars to finance. The week of March 13th, Mercury will square his Sun and oppose the Libra planets in his chart, exposing the flaws in his proposals.
Foreign Affairs: Almost every reporter who has been in Iraq has expressed their opinions that this is one of the most terrifying and dangerous places on earth. This month’s transit of Mars in Capricorn increases the violence, insurgency and attempts to assassinate leaders who are working hard to put together the recently elected government. In addition, Pres. Bush’s rhetoric about Iran and Syria and ramblings on his recent European trip about forcing democracy (an oxymoron) down the throats of the Middle Eastern nations, will backfire this month as these nations harden in their determination to resist the U.S.A. which, as they see it, is an imperialist power. Either Israel or the U.S.A. or both may turn up the heat on Syria this month, possibly with military intervention.. Saudi Arabia gets hit this month by the Mars/Saturn opposition threatening their leadership (the monarchy). Russia takes a hit from this aspect, as does both North and South Korea. Japan may experience earthquakes under this aspect as well as Indonesia as they try to recover from the tsunami. In the chart of China (Oct. 1, 1949), the Saturn/Mars transit opposes and conjuncts Jupiter, putting a crimp on their enormous economic growth. The Chinese own a sizeable chunk of the debt of the U.S.A. I think they will start getting out of the dollar in earnest in 2006 when Neptune squares their Venus (currency). This year, Neptune is opposing their Pluto pointing to the “secret” oil deals they are making with Russia, Venezuela and other oil producing nations. They are seriously worried about energy shortages.
Weather and Travel: Bad weather will negate travel plans the first week of March. Be careful when Mercury retrogrades on the 20th as there may be cancellations or delays. Wet weather is likely between the 18th and the 19th. Mars opposes Saturn the 7th through the 8th and squares the nodes between the 10th and the 11th at the time of the new moon in Pisces. This amplifies severe weather and natural disasters related to earthquakes and volcanoes.
Health alert: The transit of Mars in Capricorn aspecting Saturn and the nodes symbolizes a climate of vulnerability for contagious diseases, so stay close to home, get lots of rest. Venus in Pisces points us toward rest, reflection, meditation. This placement is considered “exalted” in astrological tradition because it suggests a kind of universal love and understanding that is nonjudgmental. Listening to music, reading inspiring books and poetry, all are gifts that enhance our lives, and take us out of the turmoil to a place that nurtures the soul.
Final Thoughts: The Sabian Degree description (“The Zodiac by Degrees” by Martin Goldsmith) for this month’s Saturn station at the 21st degree of Cancer is: “A volunteer nurse attends a mortally wounded young soldier. Smiling down at him, she wipes off his brow and hums a little song.” This symbol is so appropriate for the times of war and our current experience with this most insane manifestation of the human presence in history. The tragic loss of the best and the brightest meets up with the courage and compassion of those who are there, surrounding them with comfort and love. Frequently, it takes the worst to bring out the best in all of us. Suffering and loss can serve to bring us to our senses and help us to rise above the horizon of fear and darkness. The light of understanding is already here. We only have to lift up our eyes to see it. LindaLinda L. Schurman
