It never ceases to amaze me how effective the age-old propaganda machinery still works. The televised “talking face”, whose image strikes us as “friendly and sincere” talking about “God”, peace, and democracy, while thousands of people are dying daily in an unjustifiable war, the middle class is being eviscerated, and we are giving away our constitutionally guaranteed civil rights to a police state framed by the “Patriot Act”. To top it all off, we are engaged in an escalating investment in international military occupations abroad to the tune of the biggest federal budget deficit in history!

Recently, however, images are eroding and much of the “spin” is beginning to fail as Neptune transits the “whistle blowing” 17 degrees of Aquarius. Pres. Bush and the extremists in the Congress are looking less and less amiable as approval ratings are falling. Interestingly, “Deep Throat” of Watergate fame who blew the whistle on Pres. Nixon has just identified himself.

The Economy:

I do not know why the stock market was so strong last month as there were very few astrological indicators pointing to a rise. My take on this is that there is very little actual investment in stocks any more. Instead, as I have discussed in past newsletters, hedge funds are the “craze”, fueling the enormously speculative derivative markets and influencing the stock market. This is, in my opinion, the catalyst for an economic “crash” in 2008, when Pluto transits 29 degrees of Sagittarius to 00 degrees of Capricorn. The announcement was made that more jobs were added, but everyone I know who is well educated and trained has been either laid off or cannot find a job anywhere. I guess if you work in the fast food industry, in construction or as a cashier at Walmart, you are employed. The gap grows between what is released in the news media and what is, in reality, really happening.

The Eurodollar has moved downward, strengthening the dollar and weakening gold for now. The French refused to capitulate to a constitution for the European Union that would continue making money for the rich trans-national corporations, and contains no protection for workers or the middle class. I am predicting a currency crisis starting in Nov. of this year that will likely bring gold up to new highs. Until that point, over the next several months, the “powers-that-be” will likely hold gold prices down.

Over the long term, I will stick to my advice to buy and hold energy stocks (including oil, gas, coal, nuclear and solar technologies), gold and precious and industrial metals, and investments pertaining to water purification. Oil and gas prices will simply not go down for any length of time again in our lifetime. Ignore the short-term fluctuations and be in for the long haul. Saturn in Cancer negatively hits the charts of several major pharma companies this month and does not change into Leo until July 17^th. As we all know, this sector has been troubled for months. However, there may be buying opportunities as these stocks hit bottoms.

This month seems mixed for the stock market and the upward momentum may stall toward the end of the month. I admit that the behind-the-scenes manipulators make short term forecasting of financial markets very difficult.

Politics and Foreign Policy:

Between the 1^st and the 11^th, Mercury, Mars, and Pluto form harsh aspects with each other. This would seem to signify escalating violence, terrorism, and insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan. The civil infrastructure of Iraq is already in pieces and no significant money is being made from oil whose pipelines are constantly being blown up. All that money our Congress handed over to companies like Haliburton to rebuild the infrastructure there seems to have disappeared and practically nothing has been successfully reconstructed. The people in Bagdad are standing ankle-deep in sewerage and have no source of clean water. They have no jobs and the country is broke. The failure and misery here just gets worse.

Saturn is making its final opposition transit in the chart of Saudi Arabia. I have warned in previous newsletters of a threat to its leadership. Recently, the King was hospitalized with a serious illness. The crisis of leadership in this country is far from over.

As Saturn returns to Pres. Bush’s Saturn in his 12^th House, there will be continuing difficulties pushing his agenda in the Senate and the House. Even though the Republicans have control of both houses, the party itself is splitting into distinct factions. June 1^st through the 11^th will be particularly contentious. From June 13^th through July 27^th, Mars will transit the sign of Aries heading into the President’s Midheaven, the sector of career and public recognition. He will tend to be extremely aggressive, possibly touring the nation to convince people to “buy” his unpopular ideas about privatizing Social Security. When Mars goes into Taurus on July 28^th and Saturn goes into Leo July 17^th, hitting his Ascendant in September, things will get even tougher for him and his administration.

Weather and Travel:

With Mars transiting Pisces, weather conditions have been quite strange throughout the nation. June 1^st through 3^rd, the 9^th through the 10^th, and the 25^th through the 27^th are dates to avoid air travel due to unstable weather conditions. June 13^th through 17^th with Venus and Mercury trine Uranus is a time period that is more positive.

Final Comments:

I am continually reminded how difficult it is to look at the challenging cycles ahead through the lens of astrology. It is even more difficult to observe what is actually happening before our eyes; the transfer of wealth and prosperity away from the majority into the pockets of a small wealthy elite cabal of trans-national corporations, the withering away of the middle class, the absolutely unconscionable destruction of the global climate system as the result of the use of fossil fuels, the spread and increase of poverty and disease throughout the world, and the transformation of the U.S.A. into a global imperialistic militaristic empire who seeks to forcibly control the rapidly diminishing reserves of oil, gas, water, and land.

I am also reminded that the entire focus of our power both as individuals and collectively is in the present; the NOW. We have the power to change our course and move in alternative directions that have yet to be conceived. Many people are already firmly assuming responsibility for their lives and their fortunes and have committed themselves to the service of humanity and life on earth.

As the old world comes to an end, we may be able to reach inward into the magical realm of creation itself, leaving behind the lifeless, meaningless mechanistic materialism that has governed our lives for such a long time. The past is over; the future is yet to be created; within the present lies our salvation.
